Understanding energy terminology for Liquid Fuels

This glossary list for Liquid Fuel has been developed for those who work within the public sector and we envisage this guide to be easily understood by any staff undertaking energy procurement within their role.

The list uses plain English to explain the specialist words and expressions that sometimes make energy terminology hard to understand.

Liquid Fuels

 

Product / Brand Name Specification Uses Also known as …
Gas Oil Class A2 BS 2869 Class A2 Used for all inland applications e.g. site vehicles tractors, bulldozers etc. Red Diesel, Ultra Low Sulphur Gas Oil (ULSG), 35 Seconds
Gas Oil Class D BS 2869 Class  D Used inland in stationary generators and heating applications such as boilers but cannot be used in off road mobile plant Gas Oil Substitute for heating purposes only
Kerosene BS 2869  Class C2 Used in jet-engine aircraft, used as heating oil in central heating systems.

Kero is used for domestic heating in the UK because it does not carry duty, therefore making it cheaper than gasoil
Regular burning oil, 28 second heating oil
Diesel BS EN 590 Used in compression ignition engines; cars, buses and trucks. Utra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD),  white diesel, DERV
Petrol BS EN 228 Used in spark ignition engines in cars; can also be used to power motorbikes, light aircraft, outboard motors, chainsaws, strimmers, lawn mowers etc. Unleaded
Biodiesel BS EN 14214 Biodiesel is an alternative to convential diesel and is a blend of mineral diesel with Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME). Bio Fuel
Ultra 35 BS 2869 Class  D This is intended solely as a replacement for Heating Oil and cannot be used in combustion engines. Heating Oil, Gas Oil Class D
Furnance Flame BS 2869 Class  D This is intended solely as a replacement for Heating Oil and cannot be used in combustion engines. Heating Oil, Gas Oil Class D
Refined Gas Oil, FAME Free, which contains no Cetane Enhancing additive BS EN590 This can be used in rebated vehicles such as gritters Red diesel, fame free
Aqueous Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) ISO 22241-1/DIN 70070 This is used to lower nitrous oxide that is omitted from Diesel engine exhausts Ad Blu
