SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS PROCUREMENT
Making the right procurement decisions can have far reaching environmental, economic and social impacts. The volume of public sector procurement in the UK and wider EU is sufficiently large for it to be seen as an area that can help tackle a wide range of central policy issues, such as climate change, providing the right goods and services are procured.
The action plan produced by the Government's Sustainable Procurement Task Force identified a number of key commodity groups that would have the widest sustainability impact, and which would produce a step change in sustainable public sector procurement. The aim is to put the UK among the leaders in the EU by 2009.
ESPO has led the way in carrying out an EU compliant procurement initiative across these key commodity groups and launched a 'Sustainable Products Catalogue'. This first edition includes the following categories:
- Microgeneration Energy Products
- Energy Efficient Products, including Energy Saving Devices
- Products made from Recycled Materials
- Products and Services for Sustainable Parks Management, including Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)

SMART-SPP
SMART-SPP - innovation through sustainable procurement - is a pan-European project which will promote the introduction of new, innovative, low carbon emmission technologies and integrated solutions onto the European market. As a project partner ESPO fully supports the initiatives in the market engagement of:
-
Lighting systems (eg LED lighting, organic-LED lighting, lighting tubes)
-
Highly energy efficient electric vehicles (passenger and duty cars)
-
Heating/cooling systems using renewable energy sources
-
Office equipment and computers
